Red Non-uniform Mixtures Deflagrations

Experimental investigations of Sachet at al.(2002) of deflagration in non-uniform hydrogen-oxygen mixtures highlighted the explosion risk which can occur accidentally in the process industries. The experimental results show that the propagation of the deflagration wave is easier to obtain in a positive reactivity gradient With regards to an industrial safety, it has been shown that an explosion can be obtained even though the ignition source is not at the center of the explosive cloud and even though the gaseous mixture is dispersed into surrounding air. This preliminary study allows to define some fundamental process of the deflagration of non-uniform mixtures. The blast wave from deflagration of a diluted gaseous cloud can be correlated to the evolution of the combustible concentration versus time. The pressure wave depends strongly on the evolution of the non homogeneous property of the explosive charge. The pressure field is globally independent of the turbulence created by the rupture of the confinement during the first instants. The peak overpressure depends on the dispersion of the gaseous mixture into air and on the position of the ignition source. These factors express the flammability domain and/or the reactivity gradient of the mixture.
