European Directives Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive

The Electromagnetic compatibility directive (89/336/EEC) applies to apparatus liable to cause electromagnetic disturbance or the performance of which is liable to be affected by such disturbance.

It defines the protection requirements and inspection procedures relating thereto.

The Annex 3 of the Directive gives an illustrative list of the principal protection requirements as follows:

  • The maximum electromagnetic disturbance generated by the hydrogen system shall be such as not to hinder the operation of apparatus referred in the list hereafter:
  • domestic radio and television receivers
  • industrial manufacturing equipment
  • mobile radio equipment
  • mobile radio and commercial radiotelephone equipment
  • medical and scientific apparatus
  • information technology equipment
  • domestic power plants and household electronic equipment
  • aeronautical and marine radio apparatus
  • educational electronic equipment
  • telecommunications networks and apparatus
  • radio and television broadcast transmitters
  • lights and fluorescent lamps.
  • The hydrogen system shall be so constructed that it has an adequate level of intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic disturbance generated by apparatus referred to above to enable it to operate unhindered where it is intended to work,
  • Both statements above refer to radio and telecommunications equipment and other apparatus complying with the standards.
